Attention all employers: remember that Iowa's hourly minimum wage will increase again on January 1, 2008. Beginning January 1, 2008, the minimum wage in Iowa will be $7.25 per hour.
For all you HR people trying to get your end of year tasks completed, do not forget to post your new minmum wage poster at your employment sites and change all your computer data to reflect the increased rates so you don't get a call from the Labor Commissioner after your first round of 2008 pay checks. Of course, there are exceptions to the minimum wage requirements, but for the majority of minimum wage employees, they will enjoy 16.9% pay increase effective at the beginning of 2008.
Happy spending to all of you employees that currently earn minimum wage. To all you business owners, please quit whining. You were probably making too much money anyway. How could a 16.9% increase in your salary overhead even make a dent in the obscene profits you were making. Not to mention the 15.9% minimum rate increase that occurred in April 2007! That's only a 35.5% increase in salary costs over an eight month span. So, suck it up and smile!
Gee, I wonder if the state will suffer any backlash from the business community or whether we will experience any job losses or inflationary trends in Iowa as a result of the increased minimum wage? Nah...everything is peaches and cream in Iowa. Nothing bad would ever happen to our state's business economy. Recent developments at Bluebird, Electrolux, Maytag, etc. were just flukes! May 2008 be a prosperous and pleasant year for everyone! Happy New Year!
